The Eighth Garland (1896, first performed on November 6 of the same year) is developed on melodies that Mokranjac recorded in Kosovo. Not long but well-balanced in form, the "garland" has a distribution of tempo suggestive of a miniature sonata. The lively, rhyth­mic first song, In the Middle of the Village, with a pleasing canon in the third stanza contrasts with the slow, melancholy Why Does the Morava Turbid Flow? at times with tragic accents. Lilac-trees serves as a scherzo in character and position in the cycle, while the last song, Leap High, after suggesting a swaying round-dance, fades like an echo in the distance.
