II Garland

II GarlandUnlike the preceding, the Second Garland (1884, first performed on February 23, 1889) is characterized by concision and economy of style. Five songs in complete tonal unity (only F-minor and F-major) are combined in a formal piece dominated by a lyric, pastoral mood. The melodious first song Sky Filled with Stars and the charming second Smiljana are contrasted with a dynamic progression in Have I Not Told You, Jelane?, and after a pause with a baritone solo (Mara of Resava) the “garland” ends with the cheerful, spirited In Budim Town whereMokranjac gives reign to his sense of humour.
